Colibrí’s latest release, Papalóapan / River of Butterflies, features their trademark blend of vocal harmonies, traditional Latin American instruments and engaging style. Lichi and Alisa draw children into their rich musical world, sharing exciting and fun songs from Chile, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico. They keep the energy going with playful dialogue and evocative narration. Many songs are backed up by some of the Bay Area’s finest musicians, a children’s vocal ensemble, and special guest Suni Paz. Most songs are in Spanish, one is in Aymara and one is in Portugese; lyrics and English translations are included.”

In the Faraway Forest This release from Colibrí for children and their families contains songs from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuala plus a few originals. Songs are played on traditional instruments including zampoñas, charango, cuatro, chekere, bongos, and congas. Songs are sung in Spanish; lyrics and English translations are enclosed. “En El Lejano Bosque / In The Faraway Forest This delightful collection of Spanish language songs is performed by Colibrí, a group consisting principally of Alisa Peres and Lichi Fuentes. The two women perform a variety of traditional Latin American music, as well as a few original songs, with beautiful harmony and great enthusiasm. The songs are accompanied by a wide range of traditional instrumentation and vary from the catchy round and title song “En El Lejano Bosque” to the poignant “Indiecito Dormido.” Obviously designed to appeal to children and families, the songs are filled with repetition, encouraging listeners to sing along. Most invite movement and dance as well. Even those who speak no Spanish will find it easy to join in. This is a wonderful experience that is accessible to anyone who loves music.” —Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA From School Library Journal, May 1999

“The duo Colibrí is familiar to many Bay Area libraries for their engaging live performances. Their second record, En El Lejano Bosque is able to capture the same infectious spirit of their live concerts. Featuring traditional songs from Latin America, the CD contains 17 cuts. All songs are sung in Spanish, backed by authentic acoustic instruments from Latin America. The duo is made up of two wonderful musicians/vocalists, Alisa Peres and Lichi Fuentes. They have performed together since 1989, and many of the songs on the CD were perfected in front of concert audiences. The songs come from many different countries, from the well known “Cielito Lindo” from Mexico to less familiar songs from Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Peru and Venezuela. Although the songs are only sung in Spanish, the CD liner notes feature both English and Spanish lyric sheets. The use of acoustic guitars, a variety of percussion instruments, and different Latin American flutes enrich but don’t overpower the duo’s strong soprano and alto vocals. Many of the songs will be appropriate for school choirs, but this isn’t a “Kiddie” recording by any means. Listeners of all ages will appreciate its originality and authenticity, its dance rhythms and its soul. This is one of the few recordings that can be enjoyed by everyone, from preschoolers to adults.” —Penny Peck, San Leandro Library From Bay News, March 1999
